The short answer
Volusion and Shopify are both hosted platforms, so a Volusion to Shopify migration doesn’t involve leaving servers behind. It’s a move between two systems that store products, options and URLs in different ways.
The data side is well supported. Volusion can export its tables to CSV, and migration tools such as Cart2Cart and LitExtension support Volusion as a source. The real work is in three places: turning Volusion’s option categories and Smart Match child products into Shopify variants, mapping and redirecting Volusion’s distinctive URLs, and reconnecting everything the store relies on.
I’ve engineered more than 350 Shopify stores and migrated over 500,000 products in 20 years. This guide covers where Volusion is today, what moves, how the URLs map, the tools, and when staying is the better call.

This guide is for established retailers on Volusion, most often in the US, with years of products, customers and orders and search rankings they can’t afford to lose. If you’re a small Volusion store with a few dozen products, much of this still applies, but you may not need a managed migration; I cover that in when to stay, or go it alone.
Where Volusion is today
Volusion, LLC is based in Austin, Texas, and was founded in 1999. It sold its enterprise platform, Mozu, to Kibo Commerce in 2016. In May 2017 it announced a rebuilt platform, often called Volusion 2 or V2, with the move optional for existing stores.
On 27 July 2020, Volusion filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It emerged on 19 January 2021, having restructured its debt with its secured lender, and describes the process as a financial reorganisation rather than a sale.
As of October 2026, Volusion’s pricing page lists four plans, each with an annual sales cap:
| Plan | Price (USD a month) | Annual sales cap | Products |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | $35 | $50,000 | 100 |
| Professional | $79 | $100,000 | 5,000 |
| Business | $299 paid annually ($399 monthly) | $400,000 | Unlimited |
| Prime | Based on sales | Above Business | Unlimited |
None of that history is a reason on its own to move: a store that trades well on Volusion today can keep doing so. It does mean it’s worth knowing which platform version you’re on, what your plan’s sales cap is, and what your options would be if you outgrew it.
Retailers I speak to give familiar reasons for looking elsewhere: sales caps that push them up the plans as they grow, a smaller app ecosystem than Shopify’s, and a wish to be on the platform most of their partners and staff already know.
What moves to Shopify
| Volusion | Shopify | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Products | Product codes become SKUs and help match redirects |
| Option categories | Options and variants | Not every selectable option maps to a variant |
| Smart Match child products | Variants | Each child product becomes a variant with its own stock |
| Categories | Collections and menus | Nested categories become collections plus navigation |
| Manufacturers | Vendor field or collections | Brand pages may need their own template |
| Customers | Customers | Passwords: Shopify says they can’t be migrated by CSV |
| Orders | Historical orders | Imported after products and customers |
| Reviews | Review app | Imported and matched to products |
| Coupons | Discount codes | Rules checked against Shopify discounts |
| Articles | Pages or blog posts | Rebuilt in the theme and redirected |
Options and Smart Match
This is the part of a Volusion migration most likely to need judgement.
Volusion attaches option categories to products. Some options only change what’s ordered, such as a gift message or an add-on, while others represent genuinely different items with their own stock. Volusion’s Smart Match feature, using “Dropdown Smartmatch” option categories and the Inventory Control Grid, creates a child product for each combination, each with its own stock. By default, child product codes are the parent code with a suffix such as -0001 or -0002, unless custom suffixes were set.
A practical example: a clothing store might have a T-shirt with a Smart Match grid for size and colour, plus a separate option for a gift message. The size and colour combinations each have stock, so they become Shopify variants under two options. The gift message doesn’t affect stock, so it becomes a text field on the product page, captured with the order. Getting that split right is what keeps stock accurate and the product page simple.
On Shopify, items with their own stock become variants, from up to three options and up to 2,048 variants per product. Options that don’t change stock, such as personalisation or add-ons, need a different route: a product options app, line-item properties built into the theme, or separate add-on products. LitExtension notes that a selectable Volusion option “does not always map directly to a Shopify variant”, which is exactly why this is decided product by product at the audit.
Product codes and data quality
Volusion is built around product codes. Every product has one, Smart Match child products extend it, and search-friendly URLs include it. That’s helpful in a migration: product codes become Shopify SKUs, and because they appear in the old URLs, they make redirect matching reliable.
Before import, the catalogue is cleaned so it lands well on Shopify:
- Duplicate or reused product codes resolved, so each SKU is unique.
- Option names and values normalised, so variant pickers and filters behave consistently.
- Descriptions tidied of old inline formatting that shows up badly in a new theme.
- Product specifications moved into metafields where buyers filter or compare on them.
- Discontinued products removed from the import, with their URLs redirected to the best live alternative.
Volusion URLs and redirects
Volusion’s URLs are distinctive. According to Volusion’s help centre, on its classic platform:
| Page | Default Volusion URL | With search-friendly URLs | Shopify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product | /ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=abc123 | /product-name_p/abc123.htm | /products/product-name |
| Category | /SearchResults.asp?Cat=1 | /category-name_s/1.htm | /collections/category-name |
| Article | Varies | /article-name_a/1.htm | /pages/article-name or a blog post |
Because Volusion product URLs include the product code, redirects can be matched reliably by SKU. Every product, category and article URL is mapped to its Shopify equivalent, including both the .asp and .htm versions if the store switched formats at some point, and any underscore and hyphen variants. Volusion creates its own 301 redirects when URL text is changed, so older addresses may already be redirecting; those chains are collapsed so each old URL goes straight to its Shopify page.
Stores that never switched on search-friendly URLs need the same care: query-string addresses such as ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=abc123 are mapped product by product, because Google may have indexed them that way.
Shopify allows up to 100,000 redirects on standard plans. My Shopify migration SEO guide covers how the map is built and tested.
Protecting rankings
Beyond the redirect map, a few details protect rankings through a Volusion move. Page titles and meta descriptions for products and categories are carried into Shopify’s SEO fields. Category descriptions move into the new collection templates. Image alt text moves with each image. And a baseline of rankings, clicks and organic revenue is captured before launch and checked daily afterwards, because Google says rankings can fluctuate while a moved site is recrawled and that permanent redirects should stay in place for at least a year.
Articles and content
Volusion articles, such as about pages, policies, guides and FAQs, move to Shopify as pages or blog posts. Information pages usually become Shopify pages; anything published over time, such as buying guides or news, usually becomes a blog post. Each one is rebuilt in the new theme, its internal links updated to the new URLs, and its old article URL redirected. If some articles are thin or out of date, the move is a good time to merge them into stronger pages and redirect the old ones there.
Getting data out of Volusion
Volusion’s Import/Export tools export data table by table, in CSV, tab-delimited, pipe-delimited or XML formats, using a standard export or an export wizard. Orders can also be exported as XML through Volusion’s API, up to 100 records per call.
Shopify’s Store Migration app doesn’t list Volusion as a source. Cart2Cart supports Volusion to Shopify, connecting through a “bridge” file uploaded to the store, and moves products and variants, categories, manufacturers, customers, orders, coupons and reviews, with 301 redirects as an option. LitExtension also supports Volusion to Shopify; its documentation notes that only users with customer status are migrated as customers, with other users’ orders coming across as guest orders. Matrixify can import Volusion data once it’s converted to its template. My Shopify migration tools guide compares them.
Customers and orders
Customers, addresses and order history move, with marketing consent carried on each record. Shopify’s guidance is to import products first, then customers, then historical orders, so each order links to the right customer and product. Orders arrive as historical records with notifications switched off.
Shopify says customer passwords can’t be migrated from another store by CSV, and LitExtension says existing Volusion passwords can’t be transferred directly. Shopify’s customer accounts sign customers in with a one-time code sent to their email, so a clear launch email explaining the change is all most stores need.
Payments and integrations
- Payments. Shopify Payments is available in the US, UK and many other countries; other providers work with Shopify too, with an extra Shopify fee when you don’t use Shopify Payments.
- Shipping and tax. Rates, carriers and sales tax settings are rebuilt and tested with real orders.
- Marketplaces and feeds. Google Merchant Center, Amazon and eBay are reconnected through Shopify apps.
- Accounting, email and fulfilment. Each connection is named in the scope and tested before launch.

Reviews, coupons and other data
A few smaller data sets matter more to customers than their size suggests:
- Reviews are exported and imported into a Shopify review app, matched to products by product code, so star ratings and review text stay with each product.
- Coupons still in use are recreated as Shopify discount codes, with their rules checked against how Shopify discounts work.
- Gift certificates with outstanding balances are recreated so customers can still spend them.
- Customer reward points, if you use them, move through the new loyalty app’s import, where it supports one.
- Email subscribers move with their consent status, and only those who opted in arrive as subscribed.
Questions to answer first
- Which options carry their own stock? Those become variants; the rest need another route.
- Which URL formats has the store used?.asp, .htm, underscores, hyphens: each needs mapping.
- How much order history do you need? All of it, or the last few years plus an archive export.
- Which integrations use Volusion’s API?Each needs a Shopify replacement or reconnection.
- When does your Volusion term renew? So the launch lands before you pay for another period.
Ways to migrate Volusion to Shopify
Migration app
Cart2Cart or LitExtension move products, customers and orders, with redirects as an option.
Right for: small, tidy stores with an in-house team.
Freelancer
Can work well. Check they’ve handled Smart Match options and Volusion URL patterns before.
Right for: mid-sized stores with a clear brief.
Managed migration
Data, options, redirects, design, integrations and launch handled as one project, with a fixed fee and scope in writing.
Right for: established retailers with revenue and rankings to protect.
Preparing your Volusion store before the move
- Export every table you can: products, options, categories, customers, orders and articles, and keep the files.
- List products with option categories, marking which options affect stock and which don’t.
- Check your URL settings: search-friendly URLs on or off, underscores or hyphens, and whether they changed over time.
- Pull your top pages from Search Console so the URLs that matter are checked one by one at launch.
- Note your billing date and term, so the switch avoids paying for a period you won’t use.
- Document integrations, including any that use Volusion’s API.
How a Volusion migration runs
My Shopify migration package runs over four weeks from signed brief to a live store. Very large catalogues and complex integrations can take longer, and I’ll tell you if yours will after the audit, before you commit.
- Week 1: audit and mapProducts, options, customers, orders, integrations and rankings reviewed; every Volusion URL mapped.
- Week 2: design and buildA custom theme built around your catalogue while Volusion keeps trading.
- Week 3: move and connectData imported in the right order, integrations connected and tested, redirects loaded.
- Week 4: test and launchCheckout tested on real devices, a final data sync, DNS switched, then 30 days of monitoring and fixes.
Launch week
- A short content freeze on Volusion, so nothing is lost between the final sync and launch.
- A final delta import of customers and orders placed since the main migration.
- Redirects tested in bulk, including .asp, .htm, underscore and hyphen variants, with top pages checked by hand.
- Checkout tested end to end, including payments, discounts, tax and shipping.
- DNS switched carefully, changing only the website records so email keeps working.
- The new sitemap submitted in Search Console, and crawl errors watched daily.
What improves after the move
- Plans that don’t step up with sales, so growth doesn’t automatically mean a bigger platform bill.
- A large app ecosystem and a wide pool of staff, freelancers and agencies who know Shopify.
- A custom theme your team can edit through sections, without a developer for everyday changes.
- Cleaner product data powering filters, specification tables and Google Shopping feeds.
- Modern URLs without file extensions or query strings, with every old one redirected.
Choosing a Shopify plan
Shopify’s US pricing lists Basic at $39, Grow at $105 and Advanced at $399 a month billed monthly, with lower rates billed yearly. Unlike Volusion’s plans, they aren’t capped by annual sales, and all include unlimited products. Since April 2026 they also include core B2B features, such as company accounts and up to three trade price catalogues. I recommend a plan after the audit, based on how you actually sell; Shopify Plus is for very high volume, multiple storefronts or deep checkout customisation, as my Shopify Plus migration guide explains.
What a Volusion migration costs
My Shopify migration package starts from $19,997 USD, or £14,997 + VAT for UK clients, with flexible plans depending on the deposit paid. It includes the audit, a custom theme, migration of products, images, customers, orders and content, every old address redirected, integrations connected, launch and 30 days of post-launch fixes. I’m UK-based and work remotely with retailers all over the world. Outside the UK, the package starts from $19,997 with no VAT, quoted in US dollars after the free store audit.
My Shopify migration cost guide covers what moves the price. If you’re also weighing BigCommerce, my BigCommerce to Shopify migration guide covers the 2026 BigCommerce plan changes.
Common mistakes
Turning every option into a variant. Only options with their own stock should become variants.
Missing URL variants. .asp and .htm, underscores and hyphens: each format in use needs redirecting.
Leaving Volusion redirect chains. Old redirects should point straight at the new Shopify URL.
Losing non-customer users’ orders. Check how your tool treats users without customer status.
Cancelling Volusion too early. Keep it running until the final sync is done.
When to stay, or go it alone
- Your store is comfortably within its plan and working well, with no features you’re missing.
- You’re a small store with a few dozen products and little search traffic: a migration tool, a Theme Store theme and a careful checklist may be all you need.
- You rely on a feature you can’t replace on Shopify. Check before committing; the audit lists every feature.
Whichever way you go, keep a full export of every Volusion table for your records before the account closes.
For established retailers who do decide to move, the switch between two hosted platforms is very manageable when it’s planned. For the full service, see my Shopify migration service.
